Junior Seau's Brain

junior_seau_360
It was unfortunate when we all received the news that Junior Seau committed suicide and now it leaves us with the burning question of why. I think so many avenues can be explored but one that has been discussed is Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE). CTE is the result of repeated blows to the head. CTE is found most often in boxers and athletes (BrainLine, 2012). This particular syndrome was described originally in 1928 and referred to as dementia pugilistica also called, "punch drunk" (BrainLine, 2012). It was first noticed in boxers who took repeated blows to the head. As the individual gets older they would manifest tremors, confusion, slowed movement, speech problems, and declining cognitive ability or dementia (BrainLine, 2012). Junior Seau's family will talk to elders from their Samoan culture. He died of a gunshot wound to the chest at the age of 43. I am not making any opinion about exactly what was going on until and if after his brain is examined. However, we do know one thing a person is gone from the world who meant alot to the world and the people around him.
